Journal: October 2006 Archives

Tuesday, October 31, 2006 has come into a state of being through a somewhat transient fix. All Hallows Eve is upon us. The State of Oaxaca exhibition is only days away. Protestors stand strong, regrouping against the PFP; preparing to hold the line. Resist.
Meanwhile, thousands in Oaxaca have been laid off; they now begin to migrate towards the U.S. border seeking work.
Are we not The Americas? Why are walls being built across open landscapes? People have worked hard to remove walls- the Berlin wall has fallen and yet here in the U.S. we build.
Walls isolate culture, walls work against freedom, walls create huge scars on the landscape and divide people. Walls are not a symbol of security, they are a symbol of fear, a symbol of a regime, a symbol of isolation.

The Black Line

The black line of riot police moved towards the protestors of Oaxaca City on Sunday, October 29. Their march- steady, their force- power, their actions...set into motion by Mexico's President Vicente Fox.

Violence has replaced negotiations/ bodies stand in place of communications.

Wind whipped sheets.

The Roots installation at the Portal Turpentine Festival was beautiful. The wind roared through the piece, beating fabric and collecting art, causing the timber to pitch to and fro. The work cast an active shadow that recorded the passing of the day. The installation itself became kinetic as hordes of unseen forces ran through it.
For those of you that were able to attend, thank you for sharing your time and thoughts with us, for those of you that were unable to attend, images will be up soon.

First off, Jessica, you have just left the 100th comment on desmundo.com...I know it's not the 1,000,000 customer award at the BiLo grocery store check out, complete with horns and streamers...but, it still deserves some recognition. So, if you will pass along your home address I will be sending something your way!

Other news to note, I have heard from several people that will be traveling from outside the Swainsboro area for The State of Oaxaca exhibition. A common concern seems to be lodging- here are a few options:

The Coleman House Inn

The Edenfield House Inn

The Bradford Inn Best Western

and for campers or for a cottage:
George L. Smith State Park

Make a weekend out of it, explore Swainsboro, visit the Emanuel Arts Council, check out the art opening on Sunday at the Kalmanson Gallery. Look out for Bacci Ball games and Croquet events.

This Saturday in Portal, Georgia the StillmoreRoots will be bringing you a collaborative installation work to be featured at the Portal Turpentine Festival. We hope to see you there. The event is a wonderful celebration of the Portal, Georgia community.
The festival takes place on Saturday, October 28 from 10am- 4pm in Portal, Georgia. The event will feature live music, a parade, a working turpentine still, food vendors, arts, crafts, and my personal favorite, rosin baked potatoes.

10 days and counting.

There is a new gallery opening in Swainsboro, Georgia.
Anthony Faris and Bryan Ghiloni of the StillmoreRoots will be expanding the arts in Emanuel County with the opening of a new art house here in town. We are all quite stoked and happy for them. Score one for the Arts. Congratulations AT and PRB, on all of your hard work towards making this project happen.

More details as they become available.

A lack of drive.

The inevitable has finally happened. The hard drive is full, maximum memory storage has been reached. Hence, the lack of flow relating to visual imagery on the Desmundo site. A new source of data storage/retrieval is currently being sought after, to further propagate the notions of photographic prose and painterly panoramics. In search of a home to house the buena vista, the eye has simply ceased to function. Instead the process of building communication through imagery, over that of the written word has been transmorgafied into the action of marinate, meditate, and contemplate.

A documentary film well worth the viewing:
Favela Rising
The film is the story of Anderson and the AfroReggae Movement as motion to create postive change and sustainable growth through music and dance.

and if you are moved by Favela Rising-
you may want to check out
City of God
although not a documentary film; there are aspects from City of God that certainly tie into Favela Rising-

Seeing doubles

Thank you to everyone that was able to take part in the ArtsEmanuel festival this weekend in Swainsboro, GA. It is a community run, community driven event that educates, promotes, and provides in the area of the arts. It is those of you that take time out of your day to participate, to volunteer, to exhibit, to perform that makes the event a success each year. Thank you.
For those of you that stopped by the Desmundo booth and chatted, perused, and/or purchased art work...thank you for your support. The money earned from sales on Saturday are going to fund my next large body of work: Oaxaca. I am grateful for your continued support of my creative endeavours and hope to see you all at the opening for the Oaxaca exhibition.

As for 'seeing doubles' Nick Kask and I are working on a current collaboration that is moving along at a steady pace. It involves doubles on multiple levels. I am stoked about the progress of the collaboration. This images will be posted and published upon the projects completion.

Thanks to Melissa Cartaya for passing along a stack of blank artist cards to me...when this sentence is complete, I will begin work on them.
