May 2006 Archives
Another post from beyond. Days have been quite busy in this neck of the woods. I suppose I shall tackle things by list today, in hopes of not leaving anything out.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution published a review of the StillmoreRoots exhibition hanging at the Ty Stokes Gallery in Atlanta- http://www.ajc.com/print/content/epaper/editions/sunday/arts_44f6e5c6033412d10058.html
Item 2- The artwork has been keeping me busy. The creative schedule has changed, I find myself creating more in the early afternoon these days over the early morning. I am speculating this may be in relation to the longer days, a later start for summer classes and a large block of time in the early afternoon that makes it prime for creating. The sun is out, the plants our blooming, the bees are buzzing, it's generally a good feeling to be outdoors creating. The work is shifting as thoughts often well. One step leads to another- those of you were able to attend the Ty Stokes exhibition or the Art in the Woods event would have noticed the use of crates at both exhibitions. The current body of work is an expansion on that idea. It spawned, the use of crates, the second semester of graduate school as a happening. The crate was locked then as the crates are now- the difference being that at that point and time there was an attendee at the event who held a key. For the current body of work the key, in the begining, is unaccesable to the viewer. The most recent body of work involving the crates exhibits a twist in this reference. In the last six crates created, the key is nailed to the front upper right corner of the crate and then sealed in melted bees wax. The key is very much indeed obtainable, if it is so desired with enough cause to release it from it imprisonment to the crate. This, for me, creates an interesting situation. The viewer may be posed with quite a few questions at first observation- is the art work the aeshetic appearance of said crate with the addition of the lock and key being elements of design and nothing more- Does anything exist within the crate? Is it worth mutilating the front of the artwork to satisfy a curiosity? Is whats inside important enough to be contained with lock and key, if so, then why use such weathered wood (reference number one, bryan ghiloni) in the contruction of the crate? Will the crates be opened at alternative venues? Should the crates themeselves be appreciated for their asthetice value (if any) or for their conceptual value (if any) or perhaps both if both can be found? Perhaps the value of the crates should be placed on the objects, if any, that exist in side.
I could keep asking myself questions- it helps formulate new ideas. I would like to leave many of the questions up to you, the viewer.
The works do reflect two things- one is the efforts, passion, and ideas of my colleagues in the StillmoreRoots Movement. They are all referenced in these works, in some way, shape, form or fashion. Two- the works do reflect a sense of place- in some ways abstractly and other ways conceptually. There is more- but some things must be left to the viewer.
I am also at a crossroads of leaving ideas I continously fall back on to explore new avenues and venues- digging through sketch books, reanalyzing old thoughts- rethinking past memories.
The creative process is..........start it, the creative process, and then you fill in the rest.
I have yet to cover everything planned, but I will save it for another day.
Peace. It's something the world could use a bit more of these days.
Happy Mothers Day to everyone- without mothers, where would we be? Most likely not here would be one safe assumption. Thank you, Moms of the world, for helping to shape the future of our species, our planet, and our lives.
Minimalism- if there were a movement to describe my recent posting- minimalism would have to be it. Spring has sprung and I find myself outdoors with the plants much more than indoors with the computer in these recent weeks. The pepper plants have peppers on them, the tomato plants have blossoms, and the gourd seeds have sprouted. The coffee plant is putting on new leaves- the lime tree is covered in white flowers and the patchouli plant is making a tremendous comeback. The lantanas have returned from last year- already covered in blooms; I keep adding petunias to the flowerbeds- filling the empty space and the sunflower seeds have now have three sets of leaves on them. Although, this week of gray days and chilly weather certainly has the garden and myself craving some sunshine. In an attempt to thwart the goodmany catepillars that like to make short note of my 'mater plants I am growing all my veggies in terra cotta this year- placed on the patio in hopes discouraging those hungry beasts from locking thier mandibles around those tender 'mater limbs.
Summer also brings dreams of traveling. Which I am hoping to do. Sooner rather than later but I'll settle for the latter if the beforementioned does not prevail first. Speaking of which- those of you with the traveling bug may want to check this site out: http://douweosinga.com/projects/visitedcountries
create your own visited countries map
or vertaling Duits Nederlands
It'll allow you to make a map like so and realize just how much more traveling you have to do- wow, the world is an awesome place- get out there and see some of it!
On other fronts- the StillmoreRoots group will be hosting our first ever Fundraising Crouquet Tourny-
to raise money for our Summer Art Camp for Kids- Feel free to join in or sponsor a StillmoreRoot player! The cost is $15 and sponsorship or entry.
The StillmoreRoots also have another art exhibition on the Horizon- June in Louiseville, Ga. I will be creating more of those mysterious boxes with contents safely gaurded inside. Hmmmm....
I have been working on some black and white photographs as well- I ran into a small glitch yesterday in printing, so I will not be posting them until all the kinks are worked out. I will be attempting to keep the site as current as possible during these summer months- hopefully I will be able to add some adventure in their to keep it exciting!
Stay well-
peace to all.

another year in the making today, May 1. A wonderful weekend with family and friends at the pond in Stillmore, Georgia. The weather was great and the company even better. The wildflower field that was started 4 years ago is now self suffiecient. This year, no seeds were planted and the field is already a pink wave flowing over the earth with the next set of flowers (yellow) preparing to bloom. As the months go by, the fields color and height will be in constant flux. First the low growing pinks, then, as summer progresses, the height of the field will increase and the colors will become much warmer. This year, I am going to try and post pics of the field in flux. Now, I wonder what adventures await me as the summer quickly approaches. Will travels take me to adventure abroad? Will the continental U. S. pull me across it's wide, rapidly developing landscape? Already, there are art exhibitions planned, white water rafting around the corner, and a few kayak expidetions in the making. Any travel would be great, but then again, so would simply watching the colors of the wildflower field shift as the days go by. As with everyday that passes, I wish for the world to drop it's pursuit of blind financial gain, and shift towards the action of finding peace...and balance.
Gold is nothing more than a metal (Au/ atomic number 79) and dollars are merely paper- but lives, happiness, and peace- they are things much more complex, and things that will one day be held in much greater value...peace.
