newly turned earth
I got the call. The Roots are in ATL and the show is up.
The anticipation of knowing the crates are now swinging from chains in a distant city, casting shadows on white gallery walls, is intense. Locks that were closed are now open and locks that were once open are now secure. The effort of four years...holding onto an idea- slowly bringing it into existence and then placing within the Sacred Space created in Art in the Woods '06...building it's history....people entering into the darkness, grasping their sinlge match and gourd seed...finding lit and unlit candles, cobalt blue bottles and massive crates strung from chains and smaller crates held by old growth timber.
Taking part in the process- I created over two hundred candles for the space, nearly all were lit...burning- some leaving their history in waxy remnants trailing from the ledge to the dirt floor below. Other were moved, placed on the crates, left to burn, scarring the wood, becoming a piece of it's history, it's life. Now, they are suspended again, in a new environment, far from the halls of pines that bend in the breeze in whisper to you in yellow pollen.
